I could go on and on and on and ON about our first event and how incredibly amazing it was, but now instead of listening to me talk for hours on end, you can watch a three minute documentary about it! The documentary captures the essence of Threads for Teens in ways words simply cannot. My 8th grade English teacher always told our class that if a picture was worth a thousand words, then a video is worth a million words, and in this case it could not be more true.
We are so blessed to have had the lovely Rachel Goodman at the first event with us. She was there from set-up to clean-up and filmed the documentary. All in all, it took over a month to produce, and we are so thankful for Rachel and her willingness to film, create, and produce this video. It is so cool for me to see all of our work condensed into three minutes. It is amazing how all of the interviews, angles and voice-overs weave together our mission of empowering girls through clothing with our work and our outcome into these three short minutes in which we are able to connect with you in ways we never could before. We are so excited to finally be able to share this experience with you! Check out the video on our YouTube channel Threads for Teens Detroit ( https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCMfT_p5PpbsF2kaV4XcW3hA ), or click the 'View Our Adventures' button on the home page to check it out! Thank you for believing in us and in our incredible journey! We are so excited to share it with you.

The first Threads for Teens Detroit event ever occured on December 17, 2016 in a vacant store front in the Bedrock Detroit Building. We set up the space to look like a store so the 26 girls who came could have the shopping experience of their dreams. 26 girls in need were able to come and pick out 6 clothing items and 4 accessories of their choice. Seeing their smiles when they tried an outfit on and looked in the mirror was just amazing.
We put on these events to empower girls. Most girls living in foster homes only recieve $75 each year. This is supposed to cover shoes, undergarments, accessories, boots, hats, bathing suits, wintercoats, scarves, gloves, raingear, snowpants, formal dresses and more. What people don't realize is that clothing is not merely just clothing, but rather a source of confidence. It has been proven by multiple studies that wearing an outfit you love boosts your confidence, which is exactly what we are trying to do for girls in less fortunate situation. When we set up the shop, we are not just giving out clothing, but planting a seed - the thought that these girls actually can accomplish their dreams, no matter what their situation is. Overall, the event went amazing and we cannot wait for the next event. |
